What is a Rolla-V die?
A Rolla-V die is a die holder carrying several rotating inserts, each with a different V opening. Turning the inserts brings a different opening to the top, so one die covers a range of thicknesses without changing tooling. It is the adjustable answer for shops that bend a spread of gauges on one machine.
What is a standard single-V die?
A standard die is a solid body with one V opening, chosen for the material thickness. It is the cheapest die per opening, the simplest to inspect, and it carries the highest load rating for its size, but each thickness needs its own die or a change of insert.
How do the two compare in practice?
The adjustable die wins on changeover time and tooling count; the single-V die wins on price per opening, load rating and simplicity. Heavy work still belongs in solid dies, because the rotating inserts are the limiting part of the design.
| Aspect | Rolla-V type adjustable | Standard single-V |
|---|---|---|
| Openings per die | Several, by rotating inserts | One |
| Changeover | Rotate the insert | Change the die |
| Load rating | Limited by the insert | Highest for the section |
| Cost per opening | Lower across a range | Lowest per single opening |
| Best for | Mixed thickness job work | Heavy or high-volume production |
When does an adjustable die not make sense?
When the work is heavy or repeated. The rotating inserts carry less load than a solid body, and they add a joint that can mark the sheet. For thick plate, stainless or production runs, a solid die sized for the job is the better tool.
- Mixed gauges on one machine: the adjustable die earns its place.
- One thickness, all day: a solid die is cheaper and stronger.
- Heavy or high-strength stock: stay with solid dies for the load rating.
- Cosmetic parts: check the insert joint does not witness-mark the bend.
