Offset and Z tooling

Tooling that forms two opposite bends in one stroke, for flush laps, clearance steps and stiffening joggles.

Last updated:

What is offset (Z) tooling?

Offset tooling, also called Z tooling or joggle tooling, forms two bends in opposite directions in a single stroke, producing a step in the sheet. The punch carries a staggered profile that pushes one side of the material up and the other down.

What is offset tooling used for?

It is used where a part needs a step or joggle, typically to let two panels overlap flush, to clear a mating component, or to create a stiffening offset in thin sheet.

Typical offset applications
ApplicationWhy an offset is used
Flush lap jointsTwo panels sit level after overlapping
Clearance stepsThe step clears a mating part or a fastener
Stiffening jogglesA small step raises stiffness in thin sheet

How is an offset dimensioned?

An offset is defined by the height of the step, the two bend radii and the distance between the two bend lines. All four have to be specified, because the tooling is made to that combination.

  • Offset height: the total step between the two faces.
  • Bend radii: usually the same for both bends, but not necessarily.
  • Bend line spacing: the flat distance between the two bends.
  • Material and thickness: determines the minimum offset that can be formed.

What is the minimum offset that can be formed?

The offset cannot be shallower than the material can tolerate, because the two bends are close together and their deformation zones overlap. As a working guide, the offset height is normally at least the material thickness plus the bend radius, and thinner offsets need a purpose-made tool.

Each offset profile is a special tool. Send the step height, the radii, the spacing and the material and it will be made to that part.

Is offset tooling the same as a joggle tool?

Yes, the terms are used interchangeably. Joggle is the more common term in sheet metal trades, and offset or Z tooling in machine tooling catalogues. All three describe a double bend that produces a step.

The Z in the name is the same letter as in the shape of the finished section: the part turns one way, steps across, then turns back, tracing a Z.
