What is a gooseneck punch?
A gooseneck punch is a punch whose profile is relieved and curved back on itself, like a swan neck. The relief leaves clearance behind the punch tip so an upstanding flange can pass during the bend. It is the tool for return flanges and channel sections that a straight punch would collide with.
What is a straight punch?
A straight punch has a flat back and the tip at the front, which makes it the strongest profile available. Because the back is solid, it carries the highest load rating of any punch shape and suits ordinary bending where nothing stands in the way.
When do I need a gooseneck instead of a straight punch?
Whenever the part already has a flange standing up in the path of the punch. Bending a channel, a hat section or a return flange with a straight punch will hit the upstanding leg before the bend is complete. The gooseneck relief lets the leg pass through the swept volume.
| Aspect | Gooseneck punch | Straight punch |
|---|---|---|
| Profile | Relieved, curved back | Solid, flat back |
| Load rating | Lower, relief removes material | Highest available |
| Clears upstanding flanges | Yes | No |
| Typical use | Channels, hats, return flanges | General-purpose bending |
| Springback behaviour | Less rigid, watch the angle | Most repeatable |
What do I give up by using a gooseneck?
Load capacity and rigidity. The relief that creates the clearance also removes the metal that carries the load, so the tonnage rating drops and the punch deflects more under load. Keep the bend as close to the shoulders as the part allows and check the rating before heavy work.
