American style press brake tooling

1/2 in shank punches, adapters and heavy-section dies for the American press brake brands still common in job shops and maintenance departments across the United States.

American style press brake tooling — what is it?

American style press brake tooling uses a 1/2 in (12.7 mm) shank punch held in a punch holder on the ram, with dies that commonly sit on a plain or tab-located base. It is standard on Accurpress, Cincinnati, Pacific and Wysong machines and remains widespread in maintenance and job-shop work.

American style covers a wide range of machine vintages and holder designs. Confirm the shank diameter, body height and die base against the machine before ordering.

Which profiles are available?

Profiles are supplied to the standard dimensions of the system, so they can be combined with existing tooling of the same system. Special profiles, radii and offsets are produced to drawing.

Working with American style tooling

Because the punch is held in a separate holder rather than inserted directly into the clamp, two extra things drive accuracy: the condition of the holder bore and the torque on the clamp screws. A worn holder lets the shank move under load, which shows up as inconsistent bend angles along the part rather than as a single bad bend.

What to check before ordering

  1. Shank diameter and length. 1/2 in is standard but confirm the length the holder needs.
  2. Holder bore condition. Measure for wear before buying new punches.
  3. Die base. Plain base and tab-located base are not interchangeable.
  4. Bed condition. Worn beds change effective tool height along the machine.

Frequently asked questions

These are the questions buyers ask most often when specifying tooling for this system.

What shank size is American style press brake tooling?
1/2 in (12.7 mm). American style punches use a 1/2 in shank that is held in a separate punch holder on the ram, unlike Amada and Wila tooling which inserts directly into the machine clamp.
Which press brake brands use American style tooling?
Accurpress, Cincinnati, Pacific and Wysong are the most common, along with older Chicago and Di-Acro machines. Many of these presses remain in service in job shops and maintenance departments.
Why does my bend angle vary along the part on an American press brake?
On American style tooling the punch is held in a separate holder, so a worn holder bore or loose clamp screws let the shank move under load. Check holder wear and screw torque first, then check bed condition and whether crowning is needed.
Can I convert an American press brake to precision tooling?
Sometimes. Conversion depends on the clamp, the ram and whether the bed accepts a different die base. Many shops keep American style tooling and improve results with better holders and crowning instead.
